Taste the many flavors of corndogs only at Hadu Snackbar

    By MARK FRANCISCO

CORNDOGS are making a trend in the Philippines nowadays so what exactly are they? If you’ve watched any K-drama recently, you’ve seen Korean corndogs: beautifully fried, golden battered hot dogs with mozzarella on a stick, dusted with a sparkling sprinkle of sugar. They’re sweet and salty and completely delicious. And that’s what makes them popular.

Here in Cagayan de Oro City, you can taste the various flavors of Korean corndogs at Hadu Snackbar. The name “hadu” ain’t Korean though. It is stemmed from its former name Hakdog. So when you were a patron of Hakdog in the past, I’m sure you will appreciate more what Hadu Snackbar is now offering.

Hadu Snackbar offers the following Korean corndog flavors: ggonekim, skugzky, heybible, yejinhand, hoyeony, illusomina and start up. I won’t tell you what each variant is made of, you’ve got to try each and every flavor yourself and your chums. All flavors are available in hotdog only or in hotdog + mozzarella. Next is your choice of dips: ketchup, cheese sauce, parmesan, mayo or sweet chili. But if you want to tinker cooking the corndog itself, Hadu Snackbar is selling frozen corndogs too.

In their dining hideout at the corner of 22nd and 8th streets in Nazareth, you can also order budget rice meals (chicken teriyaki, kimchi fried rice, ultimate kimchi fried rice) and savory fries. Cool down with mixed berry, green apple, lemonade, lemon ice tea or honey ice tea.

Hadu Snackbar is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays. You may call ahead for pickup orders at 09154191855. Momentarily, you can find the booth of Hadu Snackbar at the ongoing Big Bite festival at Ayala Malls Centrio. They are located across Healthy Options.

Veterans officials and kins recall World War II guerrillas heroism

    Lest We Forget

    by Tito Mike

Top officials of the Philippines leading veterans organizations and the kin of World War II guerrillas in Mindanao converged in two events on March 13, 2023 in Cagayan de Oro City to celebrate the heroism of Filipino soldiers and guerrillas who put their lives and future on the line for the country’s freedom.

The first event held early in the morning at the MacArthur Memorial Marker in Bgy. Macabalan commemorated the 81st Anniversary of USAFFE Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s arrival at the Macabalan Wharf in Cagayan, highlighted by the turnover of a historically accurate, museum quality scale model of the PT-41 Patrol Torpedo Boat (PT Boat) which brought the general and his party safely through enemy controlled waters from Corregidor to Cagayan on March 11-13, 1942.

PT-41 scale model donated by the Sons & Daughters of Guerrillas in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental officially turned over to the Cagayan de Oro LGU on March 13, 2023. (photo courtesy of metrocdodev.com by Kim Zaldivar)

The scale model was crowdfunded by the kin of World War II guerrillas and USAFFE soldiers in Mindanao, together with supportive stakeholders like the Philippine Veterans Bank, UC-1 Corporation, Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, Bgy. 21 Chair Gigi Go, and the Philippines World War II Memorial Foundation.

“Napakalaking bagay po na makita natin itong real model of the PT-41 boat of Gen MacArthur which he used in coming here so he can temporarily withdraw so he can fight back later on,” said Undersecretary Reynaldo B. Mapagu, administrator of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO).“Kung wala ang boat na ito, wala tayong freedom ngayon na tinatamasan and enjoy this freedom and democracy that we enjoy right now.”

Mapagu expressed hope that youth, not only of Cagayan de Oro, but of the entire Mindanao, would be able to to see the scale model so they could go back in time, appreciate its significance, and help inculcate in them the values of patriotism and valor.

The Mindanao Guerrillas Exhibit, the second event held later the same day at the Elsa P. Pelaez Memorial Library at the Liceo de Cagayan University, was held to honor the Filipino Guerrillas who fought the Japanese Occupation to attain the Philippines’ independence.

MGen Romeo D. Alamillo AFP (Ret), national executive vice president of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), hailed the Mindanao World War II guerrillas for their very crucial role in regaining the country’s freedom.

“The unselfish display of unity among Mindanao freedom fighters–Lumad, Christianized and Islamized Filipinos who rose above their deep cultural and religious differences–enabled a stronger force to confront the Japanese invaders early during the war,” Alamillo noted.

According to Alamillo, the Mindanao guerrilla forces also survived their own death marches and POW camps, which inspired retired Col Cesar Pobre, a veteran of the Northern Luzon guerrilla front and renowned military historian, to write a comprehensive book entitled, “Guerrilla Days in the Philippine South: 1942-1945” which PVAO helped him publish in 2022.

Mrs. Penelope Laplap-Dharamdas, who represented the sons and daughters of the USAFFE soldiers and guerrillas who crowdfunded the PT-41 scale model officially turned over earlier in the morning, expressed their gratitude in the recognition accorded to their kin by the two events.

“Our local guerrillas fought valiantly with very little of what they had to preserve our way of life. They dug and held their ground so we may have the freedoms we now enjoy. This band of local guerrillas fought not because they were paid to do so; they joined together and fought out of their sense of patriotism as Kagay-anons and as Filipinos,” Mrs. Dharamdas noted.

Her father, Col. Fidencio Laplap, was a school teacher who joined the military when the war broke out. He was a young officer who led a group of brave local guerrillas in what was then Cagayan de Misamis.

“Their successes were not without losses. At one point, the enemy forces captured my father’s father, Melanio, and held him hostage in order to force my father to surrender. His refusal to surrender led to the death of his own father. We can only imagine the agony of such choices. And there were countless sacrifices and losses paid for by our local guerrillas. Some were told, some were untold and buried in their collective and individual hearts,” she related.

“But that was something they were all prepared to do. Patriotism was not mere words for them to utter; patriotism was a way of life and was in their blood.”

“Their heroism was untold and unrecognized for quite some time, but deep in our hearts, we knew that our parents and relatives in the local guerrillas were heroes and will remain so in our hearts.”

“Today, we finally gave them the tribute they so fully deserved. A recognition of the heroes that they were and still is today. On behalf of the families of our local guerrillas, we are grateful for these memorials and exhibits that paid homage to the sacrifices of our local heroes.”

“We also thank our very own Congressman Rufus Rodriguez for filing House Resolution # 8677, an Act declaring May 12th every year as a special non-working public holiday to be known as Cagayan de Oro Liberation Day.”

“We also thank our City and Provincial Officials and all our donors and supporters for their efforts and kindness to ensure that our local guerrillas are appropriately recognized and memorialized.”

“It is our hope that through these memorials and exhibits, the younger generation may learn about the sacrifices of our local guerrillas and how it paved the way to the very freedoms they now enjoy.”

“ I’m reminded of the words of the late Vice President Salvador Laurel who once said “A nation is only as strong or as weak as the memory of its people as to who they are, where they came from, and what their forebears stood for and fought for”.

“We hope that these memorials and exhibits will remind us of our valiant past in preserving our freedoms, our culture, and our identity. The very freedoms we can all be very proud of.”

DOE eyes cleaner, sustainable energy future

    by Jan Albert K. Araña

MISAMIS ORIENTAL (PIA)–The Department of Energy (DOE) aims to have a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for the country as it ventures to transition from the use of fossil fuel power sources to renewable energy.

DOE Mindanao Field Office Representative Engineer Erick George Uy shared during DTI-Misamis Oriental’s Talakayan on Clean Energy Transition that the department is heading towards a path of sustainable and clean energy as part of the Philippine Energy Plan 2020–2040 targets.

Currently, the country uses mostly 71.7 percent fossil fuel as a source of energy supply, alongside oil at 34.6% and coal at 37.1%. The transition towards clean and sustainable energy is part of the country’s efforts to address climate change and lower its carbon footprint.

“We want ourselves to envision a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. That is why we are encouraging everyone, especially our primary energy stakeholders to jive into clean and renewable energy,” Uy said.

Uy underscored the role of energy in the attainment of sustainable development in the country, and having access to energy that is affordable, reliable, and sustainable can be a transformative tool that will equip the country in tackling its modern challenges.

Meanwhile, prime stakeholders such as the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Lights Co., Inc. (CEPALCO), Greenergy Development Corporation, and Ulric Solar Power Enterprises Corporation commit to supporting and promoting the program for the transition towards the use of clean and sustainable energy.

DOE encourages and hopes that all consumers will participate as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, or RA 11285, will soon be in full effect. The agency also reminds the public that the effective use of energy resources starts with individuals and consumers.

Currently, as of 2021, there are 959 total renewable energy contracts awarded by the department and various energy stakeholders, which can produce a potential capacity of 48 gigawatts and a total installed capacity of 5.6 gigawatts. (JAKA/PIA-10)

Tala’s transparent fees, fair loan collections restore Filipino trust in digital lending

    Consumer ratings rose by 15%

Amid mounting complaints of borrowers due to predatory rates and debt collectors’ threats and public shaming, global Fintech company Tala shines with a positive trust rating from its consumers, restoring confidence in digital lending.

The digital lending app has earned a positive trust rating from consumers as seen in a study conducted by a third party. On a scale of 0-5 stars, with 5 being the highest, 86% of consumers gave Tala a rating between 4-5 stars for trustworthiness. About 77% of the respondents also gave Tala a rating between 4-5 stars when asked about its fair collection practices even if they are late in repayments.

“I am happy to share that Tala’s consumer trust rating rose by 15% in the past year,” Tala Philippines General Manager Donald Evangelista said. “The extent of trust we’ve received inspires us to continue providing access to financial services and extending opportunities to guide and uplift Filipinos in their path towards financial growth.”

One customer shared how their experience with Tala overcame their fears of dealing with lending platforms. They found the digital app after a search triggered by the need for medical funds for their father who had suffered a bad accident. At first, they were “hesitant” in using Tala “because I have been hearing about abusive online lenders that humiliate you on social media when you’re not able to pay on time. I trusted Tala because I really needed money. My loan with Tala allowed me to have extra funds for my dad’s hospital bills and medicine. As my family’s breadwinner, this is a big help to me.”

The digital lending app’s sterling collections standards and transparent pricing assure Filipino customers of the security of their transactions and their repayment amount with no hidden fees. Compliance with government regulators like SEC reinforces Tala’s trustworthiness by proactively reminding customers to transact only through official channels of licensed and registered credit providers to avoid harmful practices and scams. The consistently positive customer ratings show the care with which Tala handles their customers.

Beyond the loan disbursement and debt collection side of the business, Tala also stood out in the eyes of borrowers for providing customers with valuable information to guide them in their financial journey. Content such as building healthy financial habits with tips on choosing the right lending platform aids consumers in money management.

Evangelista said that the platform’s integrity will be maintained by continuing compliance with regulations and placing the borrowers’ financial growth at the heart of their strategies.

“We value the trust that Tala has earned while serving Filipinos for the past five years. We remain steadfast in serving our borrowers with nothing but fair practices and the customers’ financial wellbeing in mind,” he said.

PVAO lauds Guerrillas’ Heroism in Liberating Mindanao

    by Tito Mike

The highest official in the Philippines Veterans Affairs Office called for more Filipinos to recall and honor the heroes of its historic past, especially the Mindanao Guerrillas during the Second World War.

Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu, DAVAO administrator, issued the call during the launching of the Mindanao Guerrillas Exhibit held Monday, 13 March 2023, at the Elsa P. Memorial Library, Liceo de Cagayan University in Cagayan de Oro City.

“I would like to express how honored and grateful I am to join you all here today in remembering the valor and heroism of our Mindanao Guerrillas whose sacrifices contributed in the country’s independence,” Mapagu said. “I would like to thank the organizers of this event led by Mr Mike Baños for giving me the opportunity to immerse in the rich guerrilla history in Mindanao.”

Earlier in the morning of the same day, Mapagu witnessed the turnover of a scale model of the PT-41 motor torpedo boat which ferried USAFFE Gen. Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor to Cagayan on the 81st anniversary of the seminal event, which was donated by the sons and daughters of Mindanao Guerrillas.

“The remarkable event signifies our respect and gratitude to the General and our allies during the Second World War and reminds us of the efforts of the Filipino Guerrillas which laid the groundwork for the liberation of the island, and eventually the rest of the Philippines,” Mapagu stressed.

The PVAO official, himself a retired major general of the armed forces, related how the liberation of Mindanao would not have been possible without the Mindanao Guerrillas who all held their ground and never surrendered, despite being imprisoned, maltreated, or forced to escape and hide in the mountains. Despite the lack in resources and the hunger and dangers they faced, many of the guerrillas continued to fight, conducting ambushes, mapping out and destroying enemy installations, and gathering intelligence information, he added.

In a nod to the ongoing celebration of Women’s Month, he also shared how women also worked in the resistance movement, performing supporting roles like providing food, sewing clothes, gathering medicine, and treating sick and wounded guerrillas.

However, he cited the case of Isabel Fabro who was a double agent for the guerrilla 108th Division and the notorious Japanese Kempis (Military Police).

“Fabro’s loyalty however remained with the Philippines. She took part in arranging for the escape of an important guerrilla leader captured by the Japanese and she herself was captured, interrogated, and sentenced to be executed,” Mapagu said.

Although the Japanese offered her a reprieve from her execution by leading them to the guerrillas’ hideout, she escaped and reported back to the 108th division, settling near Gilligan where she continued working for the guerrillas by disguising herself from the Japanese and their agents.

The PVAO chief executive further related how the guerrillas actively participated in numerous actions during the Liberation Campaign such as the Raid on Talisayan, Misamis Oriental where Maj Rosauro P Dongallo, Sr. led the 110th Infantry Regiment, 110th Division, supported by US Navy task group 70.4, destroyed the Japanese garrison with 145 enemy soldiers killed, 6 captured, at a cost of 6 guerrillas killed in action.

Many of the intense and significant battles and military operations which were held in different provinces in Mindanao were carried out by mostly young Filipino Guerrillas, among them: the Talakag operations in Bukidnon from June to 29, 1944; the first guerrilla operation at Malabang, Lanao del Sur on March 24, 1945; the successful operation in defending the Dipolog airstrip in Zamboanga del Norte from March to April 1945; the Battle of Mangima Canyon in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon; the Battle of Ising in carmen, Davao del Norte in May 1945, and the liberation of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental also in may 1945.

Mapagu emphasized how the stories of our Mindanao Guerrillas and their lasting legacies deserve to be on the spotlight and be remembered for eternity but lamented how mainstream information on Philippine history during World War II mainly feature stories of the war in Luzon which leads to an impression that the war did not reach the Visayas and Mindanao. Hence, he cited how the Mindanao Guerrillas Exhibit is such a meaningful and significant event.

The PVAO supports the efforts of our Filipino historians in writing the historiography of the world war II in the Philippines from a Filipino perspective. He cited PVAO’s publication in 2022 of “Guerrilla Days in the Philippine South” by Col. Cesar Pobre and Dr. Ricardo T. Jose and “The Battle of Ising” by Ms Marie Vallejo among its efforts in this regard.

Today, we especially pay tribute to sixteen Mindanao veterans who served the nation and dedicated their youth for the cause of freedom and independence:Col Leonardo V. Hernando; Col Fidencio M. Military officials laud heroes of the World War II Resistance in Mindanao

    by Tito Mike

Military officials from the Philippine Armed Forces lauded the guerrillas of the Resistance Movement in Mindanao during two events held Monday, 13 March 2023 commemorating the 81st anniversary of Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s Arrival in Cagayan on 13 March 1942.

    Col. Ted B. Dumosmog

“Nawa ay magsilbi din ang araw na ito bilang pagpupugay sa ating mga dating kasamahan, lalo na yaong mga nasugatan at nagbuwis ng kanilang buhay, alang-alang sa ating bandila,” read Col. Ted B. Dumosmog, Assistant Division Commander for Reservists and Retirees Affairs, 4th Infantry Diamond Division, Philippine Army who read the message of 4th ID Commander Major General Wilbur C. Mamawag during the official turnover of the PT-41 scale model from its donors to the Cagayan de Oro City Government at the MacArthur Memorial Marker at Bgy. Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City in the morning of 13 March 2023.

“Nawa ay hindi natin makalimutan ang kanilang sakripisyo at kabayanihan, sapagka’t ang dugo na kanilang inaalay ang siyang nagpaatingkad sa kulay ng ating watawat. Panindigan nila ang tunay na kahulugan ng salitang sundalo kung kaya’t nararapat lamang na sila ay panantilihan buhay sa ating mga alaala.”

(May this day serve to honor our fellow soldiers, especially those who were wounded, and gave up their lives, in the service of our flag. Hopefully we won’t forget their sacrifice and heroism because the blood they offered is the color that brightens the colors of our flag. They stood fast to show the true meaning what it is to be soldier, so it’s just right that they should forever remain alive in our memories.)

While we will never be able to fully repay the debt owed to those who died defending our country, we must do everything we can to honor those who have worn the uniform of this great nation, and their families who have made significant sacrifices on our behalf.

Brig Gen Joel M. Paloma, 4ID Asst Division Commander

Brig. Gen. Joel M. Paloma, Assistant Division Commander, 4th Infantry Diamond Division, Philippine Army, expressed a similar sentiment as he read from the message of Major General Mamawag during the launching program of the Mindanao Guerrillas Exhibit held at the Elsa P. Pelaez Memorial Library, Liceo de Cagayan University, held later in the afternoon of the same day.

“Every life lost is a tragedy, it is a loss to our nation. We can only hope that the anguish of the families of our fallen heroes is tempered by the knowledge that their loved ones died for a noble cause.”

“As defenders of the people, we must never waver in our duties, and never waste the sacrifice of the veterans in their quest for freedom. It is because of their supreme sacrifice that we now enjoy our democracy. The defense of our freedom is not only just for those in the military. Each of us shares that duty and responsibility.”

“The Armed Forces are here to continue what our veterans did to defend our country from various security threats, be it foreign or domestic. We are here to protect our freedom and the freedom of our future generations.”

“Let us always remember and honor our veterans. We salute them and pledge that we will never forget their sacrifices.”

Globe, SOS PH join hands to address involuntary hunger by reducing food waste

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has brought in international food rescue organization Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines Food Rescue as its latest partner for the Hapag Movement, a unified hunger alleviation program.

Globe is taking various approaches to address involuntary hunger in the country through the Hapag Movement. Aside from supplemental feeding efforts and livelihood training and assistance, the company is now looking at reducing food waste and showing the value of food through SOS PH.

“Globe aims to create an even bigger impact by discouraging food waste among consumers and businesses. This partnership with SOS PH will help us achieve our targets for the Hapag Movement and support our sustainability objectives. We believe that we can make a difference by bringing together people and organizations in pursuit of a common goal to create a #GlobeOfGood,” said Apple Evangelista, Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility at the Globe Group.

Recently launched in the Philippines, SOS aims to help reduce hunger by utilizing safe and edible food surplus and redistributing them to those in need.

While millions of Filipinos are suffering from involuntary hunger, 1,717 metric tons of food is wasted each day in the country, according to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.

“We have seen how much perfectly good excess food from commercial entities ends up in the landfill, emitting methane gasses. We want to address this issue and at the same time help put food on the table of hungry families. Being part of the Hapag Movement allows us to forward this cause in the Philippines,” said James Leyson, Managing Director of SOS Philippines.

While SOS PH is still new to the Philippine market, Globe commits to support and enable the organization to operate and cater to as many people as possible.

SOS PH collects safe and edible food from restaurants, canteens, and other food service companies to save them from going to waste. The rescued food is brought to community kitchens to convert into meals delivered to vulnerable communities and individuals.

Starting in Thailand and Indonesia in 2016 and 2017, respectively, the food organization has already rescued and served an equivalent of around 25 million meals, or about 5.5 million kilograms worth of food surplus. This, in turn, diverted 13.9 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions from landfills.

As the newest mobilization partner of the Hapag Movement program, SOS PH is set to engage beneficiary communities in a different way – providing families in need with good quality meals, with an estimate of P50 per meal–in line with the Globe program’s format. Currently, the organization is serving communities in Manila, Makati and Rizal under its operations.

Donations raised through the various program platforms such GCash, the GlobeOne app, and credit card channels will be used by SOS PH to continue and scale its operations.
