Globe logs 85% registration among active SIM users, confident of reaching 100% by deadline

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has announced significant progress in its SIM registration efforts. The company has successfully registered around 85% of its active users and is confident that it can cover the rest of its revenue-generating customer base well within the 90-day extension period.

Since the deadline was extended, there has been a slowdown in SIM registration volume, which is consistent across all players in the market. Despite this, Globe remains unfazed.

“We intend to have 100% of our revenue-generating base fully registered within the 90-day extension. We are confident that we can achieve this with the initiatives that we are taking,” said Darius Delgado, Head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business.

The company has implemented various steps to make registration as easy and accessible as possible, including opening up GCash as a channel for fully verified Globe and TM users to register their SIMs with just a few clicks. This is on top of the GlobeOne app and the https://new.globe.com.ph/simreg microsite which are also available 24/7.

Additionally, Globe continues to operate its SIM-assisted registration booths and plans to scale up these efforts, particularly in rural areas where registration has lagged behind. The company’s 144 Stores and 25 EasyHubs across the country are also open to customers who need help registering their SIMs.

Globe is committed to ensuring its customers’ compliance with the SIM Registration Act and is working closely with local government units, groceries, and malls to set up assisted registration booths in various remote locations. It has also been regularly joining SIM registration assistance initiatives led by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) since January.

Globe continues to appeal to the government to allow the submission of alternative IDs for SIM registration as many Filipinos still lack government IDs.

“We applaud the government for extending the SIM registration deadline, as this gives millions of our unregistered customers more time to comply with the law. But we continue to ask for conditional registration that will allow us to accept other forms of identification such as school IDs and company IDs. This will help our customers who do not yet have a government ID to register across our channels,” Delgado said.

Unregistered SIM users have until July 25 to complete their SIM registration. Globe urges its subscribers to quickly take advantage of the extended time and not wait until the last minute to register to avoid the deactivation of their SIMs.

Globe renews call to institutionalize streamlined permitting process for telco infra

Globe has renewed its call for the government to institutionalize streamlined procedures to obtain permits, licenses, and certifications for telecom infrastructure, as mandated by Section 15 of Republic Act No. 11032.

The leading digital solutions platform has been a strong advocate for the extension of the Anti-Red Tape Authority’s (ARTA) Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC), which took effect at the height of the pandemic in 2020.

The JMC has enabled the company to fast-track its infrastructure buildup amid increased demand, with close to 4,500 cell sites built from 2020 to 2022, twice as fast as network builds from 2017 to 2019 and more efficiently than in previous years.

In a letter transmitted to the President by the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), the body convened by Malacañang to facilitate closer public-private sector collaboration, Globe emphasized the urgency of the request.

“Institutionalizing the JMC as an Executive Order is one of the critical steps towards serving the geographically isolated areas. Hopefully, we can fulfill the President’s promise of making connectivity universal as a vital component to ensure that no citizen is left behind,” said Ernest Cu, Globe Group President and CEO.

Cu expressed his appreciation for the ARTA’s efforts to improve and streamline the permitting process, which has been a challenge for the industry. However, he acknowledged the issue of permitting that still arises occasionally despite the JMC.

“With regard to the permitting issue, yes, it still comes up every now and then,” he said. “Sometimes areas are not isolated geographically, but they become isolated because of the local government unit itself that prevents telcos from going in.”

Cu also highlighted the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors in bringing internet connectivity to all parts of the Philippines.

“I don’t think the private sector should be solely responsible for bringing the internet to all parts of the country. After all, we do need to account for the business casing and economic visibility of such an endeavor,” he pointed out.

Globe has poured unprecedented amounts in capital expenditures in the past two years alone to provide a #1stWorldNetwork for its customers nationwide. It closed 2022 with a CAPEX of ₱101.4 billion for its mobile and fixed network, 9% higher than in 2021.

I-ACT At Your Service Awards 2.0 honors Globe for COVID-19 response efforts

Globe, the country’s leading digital service platform, was recognized by the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) and SM Cares for its steadfast support during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent awards ceremonies, the company was honored for launching COVID-19 hotlines in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The initiative helped motorists, commuters, and the general public with their road, aviation, and maritime concerns while movement restrictions were in place across the country.

The I-ACT At your service Awards 2.0 acknowledged services and deeds of deserving individuals and government and private entities that brought safe, secure, affordable, and comfortable public commuting during the health crisis.

“We are proud and blessed to have partners who are generous and committed to deliver services for our road users despite the challenges of the pandemic,” said I-ACT Chief Charlie Del Rosario.

Globe expressed gratitude to I-ACT and SM Cares for the recognition, emphasizing that the company always prioritizes the welfare of all Filipinos, not just its customers.

“We have always been committed to serving all Filipinos, even in the most challenging times. Our priority has always been to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and this recognition only reinforces our commitment to this goal. We will continue to provide not just fast and reliable connection but also services that improve the quality of life,” said Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer Yoly Crisanto.

The DOTr COVID-19 hotlines were launched in May 2020. All calls to the hotline were provided free of charge for all Globe and TM customers, whether they were using Globe landline or mobile phone service.

‘Vaccination a privilege more than a requirement,’ says DOH Usec

    by Jasper Marie O. Rucat

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–Vaccination is a privilege more than a requirement, said Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Dr. Kenneth Ronquillo while urging parents to take advantage of the month-long supplementary measles, rubella, and polio immunization activity of the department nationwide.

In the Talakayan sa PIA: Konsultayo series, May 3, at SM CDO City Uptown, Ronquillo shared that the cases of children affected by these three diseases are alarming, which is why DOH has pushed for a supplemental immunization activity apart from the regular immunization in health centers.

According to UNICEF, about three million kids have not yet been vaccinated for these types of vaccines, he said. In the Philippines, from 2019 to 2022, around 28,362 cases of measles were found, and 355 people died due to complications.

Based on the data from DOH, during COVID time, they tallied about 4,815 measles cases and 38 deaths. For Rubella, about 455 cases and one death were recorded.

For polio, although the Philippines has been polio-free since 2013, Dr. Ronquillo said they have discovered three polio-compatible cases over the past few years.

“These are alarming numbers na kailangan natin matugunan ngayon (that we need to address now), so we are here for the supplemental activity,” he said.

Of the kids 0-59 months old, DOH is targeting about 95% of these kids, particularly 9-59 months old for measles and rubella and 0-59 months old for polio, but essentially the target is to cover 95% of the total population.

“We are talking about 11 million kids to be vaccinated,” the Usec said. In Region 10, about 528,000 kids are targeted for these types of vaccines. The government is assuring parents that the vaccines are reliable and safe to use.

“Alam mo itong vaccines na ito, four decades na natin ginagamit. Apat na dekada (You know these vaccines have been used for over four decades. Four decades already). It has been proven that the only way to prevent these diseases is through these types of vaccinations. So we should be very confident in using these vaccines,” he said.

The month-long vaccination is facilitated at various partner malls like SM CDO City Uptown, SM CDO Downtown Premier, and Robinsons Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.

They are open Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (JMOR/PIA-10)

KROMA Entertainment calls for stronger protection of intellectual property rights, seeks legislated site blocking

The Globe Group’s Kroma Entertainment Inc. (KROMA) has taken a stand against piracy, pushing for passage of a bill that seeks to strengthen intellectual property protection in the country by boosting enforcement through more stringent measures such as site-blocking.

This aligns with Globe’s #PlayItRight anti-piracy campaign, which supports filmmakers and other creatives whose livelihood depends on the industry. Piracy is detrimental to companies such as KROMA, whose “tradigital” business covers the spectrum of content creation, from film, television and podcasts to music and publishing.

The creative industry is a vital contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), accounting for approximately 7.3 percent or P1.6 trillion of the gross value-added in 2022, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. However, this figure was already lower than the 7.5 percent reported in 2018, primarily due to piracy.

Piracy not only leads to unemployment but also increases the probability of malware infection on personal computers and devices, thereby placing consumers at risk. Pirated content is usually streamed or downloaded from illegal sites, illicit streaming devices (ISDs), and apps such as social media and messaging platforms.

To address this problem, the Globe Group and KROMA are supporting the revision of the country’s 26-year-old Intellectual Property (IP) Code through House Bill No. 7600 authored by Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda. Its proposed amendments seek to address loopholes that have enabled online piracy to persist and empower regulators to take action against offenders.

Globe and KROMA are members of the Video Coalition of the Philippines, formed in September last year along with key industry players in the Philippines and the Asia Video Industry Association’s (AVIA) to push for stronger intellectual property protection in the Philippines.

Currently, the IP code’s definition of pirated goods does not cover electronic or online content. It also lacks a provision that would allow the efficient and effective blocking of pirate sites.

“We are committed to protecting the creative industry and ensuring that the hard work of content creators and filmmakers is duly recognized and rewarded. Our advocacy for site blocking is a crucial step in curbing the negative effects of piracy and promoting a culture of respect for intellectual property rights. We call on all stakeholders to support our efforts in this endeavor,” said KROMA CEO Ian Monsod.

Under the 2022 piracy landscape surveys conducted by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP), consistent site blocking not only prevents consumers from accessing pirated content but also encourages them to turn to legitimate sources. Additionally, the surveys reveal enormous untapped potential, with over 60% of consumers in the region stating that they would subscribe to legitimate services if pirated content were unavailable.

“The evidence continues to show that site blocking, when implemented in an efficient and effective way, is an incredibly powerful tool to both stop online piracy, and direct consumers towards legitimate content,” said CAP General Manager Matt Cheetham.

KROMA’s stance against piracy and support for site-blocking is also in line with the administration’s eight-point economic agenda, which prioritizes creating high-quality jobs, fostering research and development, encouraging innovation, and promoting the growth of the digital economy.

Globe foils over 4M malicious bank-related SMS from January to March

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has prevented more attempts to rob Filipino depositors of their hard-earned money in the first quarter of 2023 after partnering with banks and financial institutions to fight online fraud.

The latest data showed the number of malicious bank-related messages blocked by Globe reached 4.07 million from January to March this year. The figure is 2.7 percent higher than the 3.97 million blocked in the same period last year.

“Malicious activities such as identity theft, phishing, and spam messages can severely impact consumers and major stakeholders in various industries, especially the financial sector. At Globe, we understand the importance of safeguarding our customers from these threats. Through our partnership with the banking industry, we hope to enhance our efforts in tackling cybercrime for the consumers’ safety and security,” said Globe Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio.

Globe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) last August to address the rising volume of financial crimes. The partnership paved the way for Globe and BAP member banks to share data and intelligence for enhanced fraud detection and prevention.

Just last month, Globe also inked an agreement with the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) as part of its commitment to work with banks against online fraud. The agreement allows both parties to have a direct and round-the-clock communication channel to report any fraudulent activity for immediate investigation and blocking.

Over 12 months, Globe blocked 85 million bank-related spam and scam messages amid its strengthened crackdown against fraudsters. This was part of the record-high 3 billion scam and spam messages filtered out between January 2022 and January 2023.

Aside from the partnership with banks and financial institutions, Globe continues to invest in tools and launching channels to streamline spam and scam SMS reporting both internally and externally,

It has invested about $20 million to step up its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking system. Its round-the-clock Security Operations Center filters out unwanted messages, including app-to-person and person-to-person SMS from international and domestic sources.
