PLDT drums up customer vigilance anew vs illegal modem collection modus in GenSan, other Mindanao areas

The Philippines’ leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc. (PLDT) has renewed its calls for vigilance against persons falsely presenting themselves as PLDT personnel, amid rising incidents of unauthorized modem collection in Davao City, General Santos, and other key areas in Mindanao.

“We have received more reports of modems being taken from our subscribers’ homes by persons misrepresenting themselves as PLDT personnel. We strongly encourage our customers to report these incidents to their local authorities, and to transact only with authorized PLDT personnel. In case of doubt, always check for proper identification,” said Cathy Yang, First Vice President and Group Head of PLDT and Smart. “PLDT Group’s initiatives to ramp-up asset protection efforts are part of a broader program to level-up our customers’ experience on our network,” she added.

PLDT earlier raised this warning for customers in Mindanao areas such as Cotabato and Zamboanga, as well as in Pangasinan and in Central Luzon, where subscribers have also reported that unidentified persons claiming to be PLDT personnel entered their homes and collected their PLDT Fibr modems, disrupting repair and restoration services.

In line with the PLDT Group’s continuous initiatives to improve customer service and protect its physical assets, PLDT activated Hotline 164, where citizens nationwide can report similar incidents that often lead to service disruption, including unauthorized modem retrieval, cable theft and cable breakage. Persons who would like to report such incidents can do so by calling “164” on their landline or mobile phone, regardless of network.

PLDT is also spearheading the National Telecommunications Security Council (NTSC), an industry-wide informal alliance for the mutual protection of telecommunications infrastructure nationwide. The NTSC is composed of corporate security professionals from the different telecommunications companies in the country.

PLDT operates the country’s most extensive fiber infrastructure. As of end-March 2023, PLDT had expanded its total fiber footprint to more than 1.1 million kilometers, consisting of over 231,000 kilometers of international fiber and over 874,000 kilometers of domestic fiber. PLDT’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services as of end-March 2023 had passed around 17.2 million homes in 42% of the country’s barangays.

This fiber network also supports Smart’s mobile network, covering about 97% of the population with 2G, 3G, LTE, and 5G.

RUSH Technologies Inc. (RUSH) introduces eStore Charge, their most affordable eCommerce package that empowers busy entrepreneurs to accept orders and payments from all social pages and messaging apps through one user-friendly platform. The solution is tailor-made for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the early stages of digital commerce which rely on Facebook or Instagram shops and similar online platforms. These entrepreneurs often lack the time or resources to maintain their own sales channels.

With eStore Charge, merchants can create checkout links that they can send to their clients to simplify the checkout process. From this link, customers can review, modify, and complete their orders on one web page.

Although conversational commerce helps social media sellers without any cost, the limited features of these free tools still present various challenges, including extensive message exchanges, prolonged checkout processes, and laborious manual order monitoring, among others. Through eStore Charge, businesses can offer an easy shopping experience to their customers and grow with RUSH without moving out of their free platforms- until they are ready to launch their own digital storefront.

“We understand the struggles of micro and smaller enterprises. Social media sellers in particular are keen on growing their online business, but maintaining their own sales channel, even a sales website, is intimidating for them. We are so excited to introduce the cart-linking capability of eStore Charge to address these pain points and help these budding entrepreneurs scale their social media selling without breaking the bank,” said Jeferson Cruz, RUSH Chief Commercial Officer.

Julianne Fernandez, RUSH Chief Product Officer, added: “Making digitalization easier for entrepreneurs is at the core of what we do, and we want to make every feature as intuitive as it can be. We developed eStore Charge with starting entrepreneurs in mind, making sure that they can operationalize a seamless checkout and order fulfillment process across their existing sales platforms,”

For an introductory price of Php 250.00 per month, merchants can create unlimited checkout links for order and payment acceptance. The offer is valid for sign-ups until May 30, 2023, with a one-year lock-in period. For more information, visit https://www.rush.ph/promotions/estore-charge-offer.

David Tse, Rakuten Viber SVP in Asia Pacific, noted in a 2022 statement that conversational commerce will continue to rise in the coming years. RUSH eStore Charge is designed to help entrepreneurs capitalize on this trend.

Globe’s employee super app wins two Gold Stevie® Awards for transforming employee experience

Globe’s internal employee super app Quest won two Gold Stevie® Awards in the 19th Annual International Business Awards® Integrated Mobile Experience and HR & Employee Experience sub-categories.

The highly-regarded Awards received entries from organizations in 67 nations and territories. They are presented to companies that have excelled in their respective industries.

The recognition highlights Quest’s ability to simplify and centralize digital processes, enhance employee experience and improve organizational efficiency.

The pandemic quickened digital transformation within companies, and Globe was no exception. In the rush to digitize processes, employees found themselves dealing with up to 22 different internal apps, resulting in increased workload, lack of integration, and data accuracy issues. To streamline the process, employees shifted to using the app that was most familiar to them – Quest.

“Winning two gold Stevies is a testament to the incredible value that Quest brings to the table, especially during such an unprecedented time when companies need to pivot and transform rapidly. Quest offers a seamless employee experience, resulting in a more productive, efficient, and motivated workforce,” said Jowee Jael-De Leon, Head of Digital People Experience.

Quest started as an award-winning corporate app that simplified training. Eventually, its system was redeveloped and re-designed to house the functions of all external applications, operating as a centralized hub.

With its modern, minimalist user interface (UI) and single sign-on technology that works with facial recognition and fingerprint identification, Quest now serves as an employee’s work-life companion. It is used for recruitment, onboarding, daily operations, performance management, learning and development, educational entertainment, leadership and talent management, all the way to offboarding.

The use of apps such as Quest is in line with Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9 for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to the 10 UN SDGs.

Quest’s win in the Stevie® Awards is a recognition of the app’s transformative role in the employee experience. It has become an essential tool in the new digital era– improving employee experience, growing the talent pipeline, enhancing work efficiency, building a learning culture, and igniting wellness transformation.

Sustainability takes center stage in Globe’s 2022 network operations

The year 2022 was a banner year for Globe’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its network operations, as the digital solutions platform continued to roll out green technologies towards achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 2050.

“Our goal at Globe is to continue to operationalize climate action within our network operations. We are proud to be taking tangible steps towards a greener and more sustainable future for all,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Last year, the company secured the ISO 50001:2018 certification of its Energy Management System (EnMS) covering key facilities including corporate offices, core network, cell sites, data centers, and stores. This management system establishes the company’s framework for energy efficiency, resource conservation, and network optimization as part of its climate action strategy for the business.

Focusing on responsible energy sourcing, Globe shifted 10 facilities in Cavite, Cebu, Quezon City, Manila, Marikina, and Laguna to clean energy last year in partnership with the Ayala Group’s renewable energy platform ACEN.

This brings to 24 the total number of high-energy utilization facilities now running on renewable energy, including its headquarters The Globe Tower in BGC, Taguig, six in Quezon City, five in Cavite, three in Cebu, two in Makati City, and one each in Mandaluyong, San Juan, Manila, Marikina, Batangas, and Tarlac.

Globe encourages more investments towards clean energy by dealing with Retail Energy Suppliers (RES) to support the country’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions by 75 percent in 2030 through the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of the Paris Agreement.

On reducing reliance on fossil fuels, it also piloted alternative energy sources, including solar-hybrid power plants or mini-grid and advanced solar Hybrid Generator Sets, for off-grid and bad-grid cell towers in Luzon.

Aside from financial savings from energy consumption, operations, and maintenance in cell sites, the use of renewable energy and hybrid power alternative sources increases site uptime and ensures the availability of continuous backup power during disasters. This year, Globe looks to progressively deploy the technology across its sites nationwide.

Globe is also building a green and low-carbon optical network with the help of Huawei Technologies. Last year, it deployed energy efficient technologies in its Access and Transport Networks to optimize its operations.

For its access network, the company utilized the Blade Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Intelligent Optical Network Terminal (ONT). Blade OLT is deployed in various outdoor wireless sites that reduces energy consumption by 50% and utilizes natural heat dissipation. The Intelligent ONT, on the other hand, utilizes an Intelligent Application Performance Management (APM) that reduces energy consumption by 30% by optimizing device performance for active and idle modes.

For its transport network, the company deployed Access Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Optical Cross Connect (OXC). Access DWDM simplifies the traditional equipment rooms to outdoor cabinets, resulting in faster rollouts by reducing space and energy consumption by 60% and 40%, respectively. Similarly, the OXC simplifies multiple cabinets, subracks, and fibers into one equipment, saving 80% of space and 70% of energy consumption.

Lastly, Globe introduced sustainability as a metric for its network equipment and software vendors, which forms 10% of the overall evaluation criteria. Aside from being assessed in technical and financial metrics, vendors must also look at how their products can contribute to the company’s climate action strategy. Globe engages its business partners, vendors, and suppliers, to adopt and promote sustainable practices that the company implements.

All these initiatives contribute to the company’s commitment to Climate Action including its participation in the UN-backed Race to Zero global campaign, rallying non-state actors to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero-carbon world by 2050.

In 2021, it became the first publicly-listed Philippine company to commit to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). It also committed to supporting the framework set by the globally-recognized Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and vowed to abide by its recommendations for effective climate-related disclosures.

Globe blocks over 65K child porn sites in three months

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has blocked over 65,000 illegal sites carrying child pornography in the first quarter of the year in line with the government’s all-out war against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) in the Philippines.

The number of URLs (Uniform Resource Links) promoting child pornography blocked by Globe jumped by 67.3 percent to 64,914 from January to March 2023, compared with 38,795 in the same period last year. Additionally, Globe blocked 559 domains hosting such illegal content.

In 2022, Globe blocked 399,540 URLs and almost 1,947 domains hosting child pornography, about 18 times the 22,371 web links closed in 2021.

“We understand that the internet can be a dangerous place, especially for children, and we are committed to using our resources to make it safer for all. Our partnerships with various organizations, investment in advanced filtering systems, and educational and awareness campaigns are essential steps in creating a safer online environment. We firmly believe that everyone has a role to play in protecting children’s innocence, and we are dedicated to doing our part,” said Globe Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio.

Globe has been clamping down on illegal sites since 2017 via the launch of the #MakeITSafePH campaign. Globe has invested $2.7 million in systems that filter content about child pornography, illegal gambling, and online piracy. It also educates consumers on rampant cases of OSAEC and how they can protect minors from such risks.

A study led by the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has tagged the Philippines as among the world’s leading sources of content rooted in OSAEC.

In response, Republic Act 9775, or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, mandates all internet service providers (ISPs) to install technology, programs, or software to ensure access to or transmission of child pornography will be blocked or filtered.

Globe is also working closely with government and non-government organizations in the fight against OSAEC, including UK-based Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).

The company also joined the UNICEF-led SaferKidsPH initiative to raise awareness of pressing and emerging OSAEC cases.

Globe and NABU partner to improve PH student reading comprehension using native languages

Globe and NABU partner to improve PH student reading comprehension using native languages

Stories written in Cebuano, Ilocano, Bikolano, Hiligaynon, and Maranao accessible via the NABU mobile app

Reading is an essential skill for the 21st century, and a way to encourage it and improve comprehension is by making books available in languages that are understood by young readers.

To inspire more Filipinos to read and easily comprehend, the free-to-download tech-publishing app NABU: Multilingual Kids Books has released its first batch of regional language books for Filipino learners from diverse backgrounds.

Globe has partnered with NABU, the New York-based nonprofit focused on eradicating poverty through increased literacy and free access to mother tongue books through their proprietary app.

“We believe that everyone should have access to age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and accurate reading materials in their own language. This is an important step towards making literacy more accessible for everyone with the help of digital platforms such as NABU,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

This partnership is in line with Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including UN SDG No. 4 on the provision of quality education and UN SDG No. 17, which highlights the value of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals.

The two organizations believe that confidence in children builds when they can read in their local language first, which induces comprehension. As a result, literacy levels increase allowing children the ability to expand their learning skills and rise to their full potential.

Literacy is a prerequisite for eradicating poverty. However, there is a dearth of local language books at the early grade levels, resulting in children leaving school without the ability to read. This renders them extremely vulnerable to social and economic exploitation.

Tanyella Allison, CEO of NABU, said: “We are honored to welcome all Filipinos on our global journey to create a culture of reading, and hope that our app and content will inspire children to get back into the habit of reading.”

NABU Philippines’ Country Manager Mauro Daez added: “With the release of our regional bilingual books, we want to bring back the fun, curiosity and creativity gained from reading to the major regions of the country. Whilst simultaneously, having parents and teachers discover new stories that can equally get them excited to read alongside the children. With hundreds of languages being spoken in the Philippines, this is our start to providing reading resources to those that may not be able to afford them.”

Since NABU’s launch in the Philippines last October, 50 regional language titles have been added within the app, including stories written in Cebuano, Ilocano, Bikolano, Hiligaynon and Maranao, and illustrated by local Filipino artists. These complement the currently available 100+ original stories developed by NABU, which are provided to children across the Philippines in partnership with Globe and the E. Zobel Foundation.

Among the titles available for free download on Android and iOS at www.nabu.org/download are Magturugang Habang Buhay (Brothers for Life) (Bicolano), So Alongan Ago So Olan (The Sun and the Moon)(Maranao), Layo ang Gakaabtan sa Gugma (Love Travels Further)(Cebuano), Mas Maayo kun Updanay ang Tanan (Better Together) (Hiligaynon), and Kabaelak Nga Aramiden (Dare to Try) (Ilokano).

Globe has always been a strong advocate of literacy and digital skills. It has the Globe eLibrary mobile app and website (globeelibrary.ph), which contain hundreds of classic English titles, age-appropriate storybooks, eLearning videos, and other resource materials that can be viewed online or downloaded for later use.

From microwaves to fiber optics: Globe journeys towards greener network

Digital solutions platform Globe has transformed its network equipment to more energy-efficient and economical options in line with its climate action strategy.

The company recently migrated its site backhaul from utilizing microwave antennas into a fully redundant fiber optic cable solution as it intensifies the shift to green technologies.

The move lessens power consumption since most long-haul microwave sites are composed of multiple big antennas and outdoor units that contribute to higher power consumption. Globe has already logged savings of 84,288 kilowatt-hours from 151 converted sites.

Aside from being more sustainable, the initiative boosts network capacity with a higher bandwidth that would support increasing demand for data in the country. This will not only bring benefits to Globe but the country as a whole.

Moving forward, Globe plans to expand site conversion and explore other microwave solutions and equipment that are sustainable in terms of lower power consumption and footprint.

“We are dedicated to creating a sustainable future through technology. Our conversion of microwave radio sites to fiber optic cable is a step towards reducing our carbon impact while ensuring backhaul efficiency. We are proud to be part of the global effort towards a healthier and fairer world, and are fully committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions,” said Gerhard Tan, Network Strategy and Technology Enablement Director at Globe.

Globe supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 13, which seeks urgent action against climate change and its impacts. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.

Aligned with the commitment of parent firm Ayala Corp., Globe is also a participant in the UN-backed Race to Zero global campaign rallying non-state actors to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero-carbon world by 2050.

Likewise, Globe was the first Philippine publicly-listed company to commit to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) aligned with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.

As part of its commitment to support the disclosure recommendations by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the company shall continue to disclose its climate action strategy and programs as it works towards achieving its committed targets.

Inflation in NorMin decelerates to 7.4% in March 2023

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-X reported that the inflation rate in Northern Mindanao slowed down to 7.4% in March 2023 from the 8.0% inflation rate in February 2023.

The main sources of deceleration were food and non-alcoholic beverages, with inflation decelerating to 10.9% from 11.8%; housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels with an inflation rate of 5.0%; and transport with inflation slowing down to 3.5%.

PSA-X Chief Statistical Specialist Sarah Balagbis said the top contributor to the deceleration of inflation in food and non-alcoholic beverages was vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas, and pulses which decelerated by 9.0 percentage points, from 31.6% to 22.6% with onion as the main source of the slowdown.

Inflation of rice also decreased to 3.7% from 4.6% in February 2023 while meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals posted 13.3% inflation from 14.7%.

Contributing to the deceleration in transport were gasoline with -6.2% inflation in March from 4.4% in February, as well as, diesel with-5.7% inflation from 15.1% in February.

On the other hand, the decrease in the inflation of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels was attributed to electricity with -1.3% inflation from 3.2% in February; and LPG with 3.1% from 14.7% in February.

PSA-X supervising statistical specialist Brenda Lynn Castro, meanwhile said they are hoping for the deceleration to continue until the end of the year so that the inflation rate would normalize and public spending would increase. (APB/PIA-10)
